Too Close to Call?

So, as predicted the two games provided a contrast in styles but provided some drama in both matches. With rain in the North and the weather mainly dry in the West, all four teams played some commendable rugby.
Enkoping lost to their visitors 23-25, a much closer margin than perhaps expected and the gave the Exiles something to think about during the next week. In pouring rain, both teams produced some exciting rugby and showed the watching spectators that these two sides are the best teams in Sweden,(although Hammarby may argue this point).
The visitors started the stronger and were soon into their stride, with Enkoping having to defend, but a number of indiscretions led to a series of penalties allowing the home side to advance into the opposition's half and from yet another penalty take the lead.
Exiles dominated the game for the first 20 minutes, then a yellow card to the visitors fullback allowed Erk to get back into the game and score a fine converted try. With a 10-0 lead the home side looked set to dominate but Exiles took the game back to the home side and through a well worked maul managed to score a converted try, bringing them right back into the match and at half time the score was 10-7.
From the restart the men in black applied enormous pressure through their forwards and soon added to their score through a try, thus taking the lead for the first time in the match. It wasn't long before they added to that score through an individual effort which was converted, between theses scores, the only response was 3 points from a penalty to the home side.
With less than 20 minutes to go the hosts started to get their illustrious backs going and scored two fine tries which was answered by a penalty from Exiles, leaving the score at 23-25 with just a few minutes to go. There were no further scores and the match ended with the visitors happy with the win and the hosts knowing that there is all to play for next week.

In the West, Hammarby, the league winners visited the team that finished 4th in the Elite, Spartacus. The rain ceased for most of the afternoon, but the pitch was wet and slippery underfoot. This was a match that the visitors were expecting to win but the hosts have been difficult to beat at home this season, so it was not going to be an easy match for them. Within a few minutes of the kick off, the visitors conceded a penalty just outside their 22m and the points were eagerly taken by the hosts. The game then developed into a battle for supremacy and in the forwards Spartacus were gaining the upper hand. The visitors managed to get a foot on a loose ball though and with the ball sliding into the home side's goal area and the fullback taking too much time over grounding it, a Hammarby back slid in to touch down and give them the lead. That was to be their only score of the half as the hosts flew back at the opposition applying pressure and from a series of rucks moved the ball out wide for a first class try which was converted. The half time score 10-5
Hammarby were soon back on the scoreboard after the break and reduced the deficit by 3 from a penalty in front of the posts. This seemed to galvanise the visitors and they launched a series of attacks, all of which were stemmed by some outstanding defence. The hits were coming in hard from the all the Spartacus players and as a result, several of the visiting team were replaced. Spartacus were also doing their fair share of attacking in their own inimitable style and from one of these attacks were awarded a penalty, giving them back the 5 points advantage they previuosly enjoyed. This was soon knocked back again following a mistake in the home sides half and  a fine penalty kick once again saw the lead reduced. By now though, the Hammarby team were starting to tire and with the hosts bringing on fresh legs, they continued to be driven backwards towards their own line only desperate defending kept the host's from getting over the whitewash. In the last minute of play they conceded a penalty, and the points were taken to give Spartacus a fine win by 16-11.
The return match will make interesting viewing and although Hammarby will expect to win this one, if Spartacus play as well as they can, they could cause an upset.

  1. Looking at the Spartacus results on the road its obvious that they don,t travel well.Hammarby to win by a big margin.Exiles to finish off Enkoping for a all Stockholm final.

  2. Great results for swedish rugby. Close games leaving it to the last week .i pick exiles spartacus final. Those two have the toughest forwards. In shit weather you have to win up front first.

  3. I was at the game on sat .hammarby were very average and lucky not to lose by another 15 points .they must be holding there top players back for the home leg. Risky business

  5. Was Mike Tatu at either of these games in his role as Swedish national coach? I think Vanersborg had a week off

  6. Hahhahaha! So the Grf-players were supporting Spartacus. That must be the biggest lie of all time! Hahahahahhaha

  8. I,m sure the GRF team would support a fellow gothenburg team. Why would,nt they. They know how hard it is to get to a final. They have been in the semis before and went close to beating exiles a few yrs back. Have they won a semi before ? Or is spartacus the first team to win a semi from Gothenburg ?

  9. (In shit weather you have to win up front first)

I saw ERK-Exiles and both teams played very well in the pouring rain with not many handling errors. It's an open book. Any team can win saturday, ERK, EXILES, HAMMARBY, SPARTACUS.
I'm going there to see some good rugby!

  10. Swedish rugby is going the right direction. Now we have four strong teams instead of two. If another one or two can step up next season we could have a great comp...possibly attila..lookking forwards to the last semi..exiles spartacus my picks. Murray.

  11. It would be foolish to write off Hammarby as most people seem to be doing. Spartacus haven't played well away from home this season, and Hammarby have a week to sort out any problems that they have. The match in Gothenburg was an ambush, but Hammarby will be better prepared this time around.

Tough call between ERK and Exiles. I think ERK might just pip it.

My guess is an ERK - Hammarby final

  12. cannot believe the laughing boy/girl comment. why would the Grf players support a team from the west? some of the players used to play for them so whats the beef or is it jealousy, really sad if that is the reason!

  13. Spartacus haven´t sent there top away team to a north team all yr. I bet they do on sat though.I pick spartacus to win this by 10.Hammarby will know whats coming but i don,t think they have the players to stop it.

  14. What must of been interesting for mike tatu was a forward pack containing a swedish front row and swedish back row players were killed in the scrums and well beaten in the ruck.On current form he could,nt pick these players. I hope he travels to Stockholm to see if these players can save face....

  15. ERK feel hard done by the ref but there problem is not the ref It´s a lack of front row. Spartacus has the forwards led by Alan&Argie to compete with HIF but is it enough on a big pitch? Only if they can get the game where they want with forward orientated game and 100% defense. I would say that both games are open with advantage for HIF and Exiles considering previous results.

  16. I hear Hammarbys 10 is out. A big loss for them! Will be hard for them to turn it around...

  17. Grf/Spartacus are rivals, and it implies cheering up for the opposing team. It has nothing to do with jealousy or disrespect. It is more about teasing.

You can find the same king of rivalry between clubs, cities (Gbg/Stkhm), nations (England/France, maybe Norway/Sweden)...
I reckon this behaviour is not really Scandinavian though.

  18. I hear Hammarby have flown in a new forward pack for this Saturday. They must have learnt from their big brothers how to play players in the final that haven't played in the first half of the season, like their Number 9 that only arrived in the country to play in the Stockholm 10's. If I was ERK I would be asking to see that all passports actually match the names of who is playing.

  19. Just wondering why our number 10 isn't playing. Has anybody told him yet? It might come as a surprise since he has been training twice this week so far. But please keep the rumours coming because they make me laugh.

  22. Hej my sis plays for exiles ladies and she told me that a person flew in from aus to join the mens team and he only came just before the tens as well. So I would say that rumor is on the money. I would check the visa stamp they got when they came into sweden not just names

  23. I was at the ERK game and thought that the better team lost. If it wasn't for exiles NZ import kicker they wouldnt have won the game. Exiles have the better forward pack but so they should if you go shopping with their credit card. I wouldnt be surprised on a dry day if ERK backline didnt score a few tries this week. Im hoping for a sweden final ERK v Spartacus or Hammarby.

  24. Meanwhile, in the rest of Sweden: Clubs are developing swedish players, having fun playing the game, respecting the opponents and are competing within the "tävlingsbestämmelser". Good luck to which ever of the foreign teams who will win the swedish league this year!

  25. I ASKED MY SIS AND THE EXILES PLAYERS NAME IS WILLY. HE ARRIVED FROM AUSTRALIA JUST BEFORE THE TENS AND THAT WAS HIS FIRST GAME FOR THE CLUB

  26. Can you imagine if all these people put in as much effort into recruiting local players and play rugby, as they do with gossiping and blogging, what we could achieve in Swedish Rugby!!!!

  27. looks like your sis know him very well :)) shoes size?

  28. i just don't undertsand what Exiles get out of it. They spend all of this money flying in people from all over the world and paying for them to be here and so what if they win the SM. I just don't know why they would put all of that money into imports rather than spend it on us swedish players to develop.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Exiles actually have a very robust development system and ong term plan in place. But doubt anyone is bothered to hear about it.

The club is looking to the future and it's homegrown talent.

  30. translation for comment (Anon 23 September 2010 00:38 ) - in brackets

Hej (im pretending to be swedish) my sis plays for(i play for another club not exiles) exiles ladies (no she does not) and she told me (i checked with MI7) that a person flew in from aus (aus has planes?) to join the mens team (to get drunk in sweden) and he only came just before the tens as well (he happened to arrive on a planned year off to get drunk). So I would say(guess) that rumor (usual bullshit) is on the money (maybe mexican peso, would not bet dollars). I (being an immigration officer in disguise) would check the visa stamp (saw it on a jason bourne video) they got when they came into sweden not just names (as, like jason bourne this person has multiple identities, and should not be trusted).... hahahahahahahahahaha

    ReplyDelete
  31. Just to let you know that the guy who flew in did play in the first half of the season. He also paid for his own flight, and got himself a job.

    ReplyDelete
  32. He would be one of the few exiles players to pay for their own airfares or they pay for their own but then the club pays them back if theyre good enough.

When is the development plan going to start. The only thing exiles are trying to develop at the moment is the stamping hand of the immigration officer.

But please tell all of us about this robust development plan. I am sure every man playing rugby in sweden would like to know about it.

  35. Dear international spy Aaron (aka austin pink powers). You should enter politics, or write for a gossip magazine as you obviously dont let truth get in your way, or perhaps your are just ignorant or young. If your willing to stalk people via facebook, as evidence to back up your lies, you are obviously quite a twisted person with some strange motives. A simple phone call to the union would have sorted out all your issues. ps, nice of you to try and bring you sister into your arguement.
