First All Stockholm Final.

At the end of the day, Sweden had it's first all Stockholm final. This should be a a tremendous spectacle and give the capital a match to remember.

Enkoping visited Arsta full of hopes that they could turn around the 2 point deficit and reach yet another final. Exiles had other ideas and were not going to take their opponents lightly. From the off the home side went onto the attack putting together a number of effective phases eventually forcing the visitors to give away a penalty for offside which was gratefully taken. The home side though started to concede a number of penalties allowing their visitors to gain ground from them and with the assistance of a strong wind got down into the home side's territory and from yet another penalty scored 3 points to equal the score.
The men in black then attacked again and earned themselves a yet another penalty, from the resultant scrum and worked the ball over the tryline to score.
Enkoping started to run the ball from everywhere and to utilise their talented backline but could not break down the Exiles defence but both defence's stood firm. For some ridiculous reason a yellow card was shown to an exiles player and ERK threw everything at their hosts and despite the numerical advantage they could not get the ball over the line. the half time whistle signalled that there had been no further score.
From the restart the hosts kept running the ball at the visitors and but from a few hurried passes may have added to the score, earlier than they did. Eventually the last pass stuck and they went over to score a well deserved  converted try. This was added to by a score under the posts which was converted and the game was virtually over. Enkoping kept probing and eventually scored out wide to get some self respect back.
However Exiles came back even stronger and scored two more tries to record a 34-8 win and a aggregate score of 59-31.

On the other pitch and with the kick off at the same time, (WHY) Hammarby entertained Spartacus. The green and whites started of at a whirlwind pace and were determined to beat their less illustrious opponents. However it was the visitors who were awarded a penalty just inside the home side's half. The kick at goal was just missed and within a few minutes the home side had managed to score out wide and convert the try. Unfortunately during this phase of play the visitors lost their captain and number 9 with a dislocated elbow. There followed a game that was constantly interrupted by the referee awarding a number of penalties that left not only the players but the coaches and spectators baffled. The tackling was ferocious by both sides and after another ruck the number 8 from Spartacus left the field with a serious ankle injury. From yet another strange penalty Hammarby managed to score yet another converted try giving them an overall lead of 9 points. From the restart Spartacus were reduced to 14 men following a yellow card and during this period the home side exerted enormous pressure, however they could score following some tremendous defence and a little bit of luck, the visitors held the home side out, scoring from a penalty themselves. Hammarby managed to score two more penalties before half time.
The second half was similar to the first but overall belonged to Spartacus and the penalties were now being awarded against the hosts. The visitors were playing catch up and they appeared to be rushing rather than play at the pace they had the previous week. This played into Hammarby's hands and they were able to handle the onslaught.  Hammarby were once again awarded penalty and they took the 3 points. The game was still displaying some tremendous tackling which was only to be applauded. Though the late hit via a flying headbutt on the visiting 10 was a disgrace and bought the home side a yellow card, which could and arguably should have been a red. This followed several unsavoury incidents which have no place in the game.  Eventually the visitors managed to cross the line from a poor kick to touch by the home side which was run back at them for a fine try. A penalty restart into touch ended the game, with Hammarby worthy winners, 23-8 giving them a winning overall score of 34-24.

From our view, there was too much intervention by the linesmen in both matches and it would be beneficial to have independent referee's in the middle. It appeared that the man in the middle for the Hammarby v Spartacus match was very much out of his depth. The Union also need castigating for allowing both games to kick off at the same time. It's time the board woke up to the realities of the game!

That expressed, we are looking forward to the finals and hope to see some great rugby as an advert for Swedish Rugby.

  2. I actually like to read this blog and think it fills a void but sometimes your alliance shine through. Why not describe the Spartacus yellow card the same way; tackling in the air, no arms and way before the ball was close. Blaming the ref is childish and lack of knowledge, let the Horse take care of that...

  3. To the anonymous person called Groth who said my sis was wrong I was wondering why Exiles player Will Arnott on his Facebook page shows he wasn't in Stockholm for the first half of the season but has played in the two semi-finals.

Isn't this cheating? I thought you had to qualify for the finals

  4. I totally agree with the point about the men in the middle of the games. The shame is that the refs are supposed to be in the top four refs in Sweden. It doesn't say much about the rest of them. They are so far out of their depth that they ruin what could be good games of rugby.

As for the Swedish Rugby Board, I wonder how many of them were actually out at Årsta supporting the games. They can't wake up to the realities because they don't even know anything about running an organisation.

  5. Will Arnott played for Exiles II vs Trojan on July 3rd. He was licensed, legal and in Norrköping on that day, as was I. The match report was filed with the Union after the game. His opposite player was Sami Paulsson, then Trojan, now Enköping. Why don't you (or your sister...) reach out to Trojan or Sami and ask them whether Will played that game or not? He was our man of the match, which was reported on our website the same day as the game.

In that I am one of the few remaining dinosaurs who does not have Facebook I did not check his status before the game. I did however file his passport, visa, clearance, registration form, paid the fee and insured him with Folksam before the game.

The Union included Will in our list of qualified players before the First semi. So to respond to your questions, no, complying with the rules is not cheating and yes, he is qualified for the playoffs.

Feel free to contact me if you need further information.

  9. Will Arnott played in the first half of the season. Aaron your sister is a little mistaken sadly. He played for Exiles 2nd's in division 1 and the 3rds in the Medelareseries so he'd played 2 games in the first half of the season.

He also played the entire second half of the season in the first team.

  10. To be fair, it wasn't only the ref's that created the outcome for Spartacus. HBRU's defence in close was exceptional and unfortunately Spartacus couldn't utilise the field position they needed to play the pick and go game. The great Hammarby defence and the constant penalty count from the ref held Spartacus in their own 40m which suffocated the game. All credit to Hammarby, they were nothing but exceptional in defence. I am however extremely happy that the video of the game is being sent to the Sweden rugby union though, as no matter what side you were on, the abilities of the referee and touch judge on the far side was inexcusable, even for a union like Sweden and the performance needs to be seriously addressed. This cannot happen again, especially in a semi final.

  11. Key moment of the Spartacus - Hammarby game was, in my view, the reversal of a penalty in the second half.

Spartacus had pulled the game back to a nine point tie with a penalty score early in the second half. Shortly afterwards, they were awarded a second very kickable penalty which would have made it a 6 point game (over the two legs). Doubt may well have set in with Hammarby, and the game could have changed. Unfortunately, Julian Bevan told the ref to reverse his decision as a Spartacus player threw a punch off the ball. We have the incident on tape, and you can see clearly that there was no punch. Don't know what Julian was up to.

Anyway, I agree with the above comment. Hammarby deserve their win as they defended really well. Can't blame the ref for too much. He didn't have a great game, but he wasn't incompetent or biased in my view.

  12. you have to be able to play the refs, they are the same guys that we have here all year, players need to adapt. having watched as much as possible of both games this weekend it was clear that exiles adapted better up front in the second half, almost completely reversing their penalty count, which allowed them to dominate ERK. good ref or bad ref the best teams on the day are in the final. give the refs some slack or pull on a jersey and try it out!!!!

  15. Spartacus payed the price to be the "new" team in the semis. that is really bad for rugby, for the spartacus players, spartacus club, and to the rest of teams from the west or south, here in sweden looks like just the team from the north can win something,,spartacus dosent have a player in the national tema now, that is a clear example that ,is going to be hard to them to make their way up, but at list i know that they play incredible at home ,so next year they will kill more than one team ,looking forward to see the rugby federation do something,, YES TO FAIR PLAY

  16. Hamish it doesnt matter if his name was on some team sheet everybody knows exiles write players names down that arent even there and play people under different names. I was part of exiles i unfortunately have to admit and know the tactics that the club uses.

My advice to hammarby is to check every players visa stamp in their passports before the game that way you can see when they arrived in the country

  20. To the anonymous numb nuts who refuses to believe that Will was here the first half of the season, I too can state categorically that he played in the Trojan game. I was there and played alongside him. Maybe you find it hard to accept the truth and prefer conspiracy theories but in this case your being a tool of the highest order, the union say he was here and good to play, Hamish who I'm sure you would not intentionally libel has confirmed that he was here, and his opposite number, or rather the whole of Trojan can vouch for him as I am sure they will remember the guy who gave them such a torrid afternoon. Your assertions otherwise are based on something somones Sister may have mistakenly uttered at some point. Do you really believe that Exiles would write on their web page that he was man of the match just to try and cover up his not being there? That would seem pretty counter-intuitive. Why do you waste your time peddaling this tripe? Are you so jelous that a club that has Exiles in it's name can attract a player from abroad, or are you just miffed that he has turned out to be such a good player? Because I can assure you that we have many more players coming every week off their own back who turn out to be not as good and end up in our seconds or thirds. I would suggest that you spend the time you have more productively, namely on improving your own club, rather than constantly sniping at the hard work and success of others, that way maybe your club could one day rival the success of Exiles, and rather than carping from the sidelines I would be the first to applaud you. Julian Clayton.

I hope the two Exiles players, Paul Sullivan & friend, enjoyed attending the Hammarby training session on Monday night.

I am sure it was very useful for you and you learnt quite a lot about how we are going to play on Saturday.

I have never heard of anything so ridiculous in my life.

I think it is a real shame that the best game of rugby all season, the SM between our team and Exiles, is being used as a money raising exercise by Exiles. Instead of promoting the game and encouraging as many people to come to the game as possible Exiles are charging all spectators 100kr.

I would like all of our supporters to know that Hammarby have nothing to do with this and in fact I have asked questions and been told that since it is actually council land, not Exiles land, that they may not have the right to charge an entrance fee, that it should be a donation.

I would encourage the Exiles committee to think of the wider picture and throw the gates open and allow as many spectators as possible to see a great match between our two clubs, rather than thinking of how they can raise money for yourselves.

Surely a donation would be a better way of going if all you are interested in is money rather than publicising our game.

  33. Question: I might be wrong, but how can Spartacus keep claiming 3rd? Should it not be 4th? ERK 3rd?

I apologize if i am wrong.

  34. I have heard and read a lot of stories about exiles this year and have kept out of them because I dont believe it is productive for swedish rugby; however after last week's malicious attacks on our coach I feel it is time for me to have a say.

Our coach and his wife and two young daughters were brought out here by Exiles committee to coach them this year. He was a principal of a school in australia which he gave up, his wife was a teacher and his 2 young girls were in school. He gave up everything to come here and help swedish rugby.

When he arrived he found out from 3 exiles coaches and 2 players that a committee meeting was held a few weeks earlier and had decided that he was no longer wanted. Instead of having the manners to tell him of their decision before he came to sweden they allowed him and his family to arrive and then find out off other people. Once he found out the president of the club did not even have the manners to meet him personally and tell him of the committees decision. Instead he wrote him emails.

So here was this australian who just landed in our country with his young family, finding out by email that he is no longer wanted by the club. To add to the way he was treated by exiles he was not even offered a refund of his familys airfares, even though the same club president put on their juniors website in response to comments about his behaviour that he was refunding the airfares in full. He paid for his family to come all the way out here to be told by exiles he was no longer needed. That is not how swedish people should treat anybody.

The best thing for our club is that he approached us and asked us if we needed a coach. We could offer him nothing, unlike the huge contract that exiles offered him but he didn't want anything apart from a chance to help us out. Thanks to him we were the league winners and now are playing in our first ever SM-Final.

So on behalf of all of our team, thank you exiles for treating our amazing coach like that and for just adding another negative story to the huge exiles pile.

  36. Good question Anonymous at 30 September 2010 19:31.

ERK claimed the bronze on their web-site first, so we rang the union to ask if that was true (They finished 3rd in the league, but if you look at the semi-finals table on the union web-site Spartacus are ranked third). The union got back and said that as there is no 3rd place play-off, both teams share the bronze.

Spartacus are delighted to have a bronze, but we can't say that we were third. We were JOINT third with ERK

  37. Sparatucs won 1 of the semifinals, and Enköping lost both,, Spartacus lost also for a small marginal than enköping, Enköping finish 3rd in the league , that dosent mean that in the play off,the finished 3rd

  38. Alex eliasson for example, the spartacus prop and 1 of the captians he had a great season and not just killed the hammarb prop ,he is one of the bes prop in the country and have a lot of future, but of course mike tatu just look the vännersborg prop,Alan letele still for me the best number 8 ,,is 38 ok, but still he can play 40 or 60 minutes,, the nationl team is a monkey bussines,

  39. This blog is ridiculous, the amount of handbags and bitching that is going on from Hammarby regarding one thing or another to do with exiles. Whether its Will Arnott's registration or the entrance fee for this saturday this is the reason why Swedish rugby is foundering in the lower depths of international rugby because there is a dearth of players with a bit of bottle who get on with their OWN game. So to Hammarby why don't you stop trying to make false accusations based on a wing and a prayer and concentrate on your own game. Especially you u little gremlin of a coach

    ReplyDelete
  40. As usual, comments are being pssed on exiles whilst only hearing one very incorrect side of an amazingly strange story. Gremlin reminds me of a snake charmer in india, playing his tune to all the gullible people around the basket whom will listen, and they then believe the snake does not bite. Do some research, and in fact you'll find its a black mamba snake, with deadly poisonous venom. I believe bi-polar is the commonly known afflication for this type of behaviour.

    ReplyDelete
  41. so do the Hammarby players know that infact he was going to be Exiles coach.....until Exiles did some background checks on him and found out that he had lied to them and he was in fact banned from coaching in Australia. That is the reason why exiles choose to cut him loose.

Perhaps if he had been open and honest from the outset then his family wouldn't have found themselves in the unfortunate predicament that they arrived to? Just a thought?

Oh no...but of course, Exiles have to be the bad guys in every story. Fine by us.
