They thought it was all over, it is now!

As the final whistle went and the combatants either jumped in the air with jubilation or slunk to the ground in despair, the departing spectators were no doubt thinking about the match they had just witnessed. Not the most entertaining of contests but who cares when your team has just won the SM gold.

As the teams lined up for the kick off, it was noticeable that Hammarby had made a couple of changes to their pack, bringing in a two sizable forwards, presumably to make sure the set piece, especially the scrum was more of an even contest this time.
From the kick off both teams appeared to be slightly ponderous and they appeared to be suffering from nerves, although the weather was perfect for a running game and probably was just what Stockholm Exiles wanted, as it would suit their style more. The visitors soon showed that they had adapted their game plan and were constantly attacking their hosts blind side, cleverly conceived as it was a good counter to Hammarby's rush defence. Although the home side stood up and defended well against some early forays by the men in black. The hosts then started to impose themselves on the game and controlled some strong drives earning them a penalty kick, which was successfully taken. Thus reducing the overall deficit to 6 points. After the penalty though, they never really looked as if they were going to score again. With Exiles continually attacking, the home side had to resort to their strong defence and rely on some poor handling errors by the visitors, they also handled the scrummage a lot better this week and that was a telling force in stopping their line being crossed.
Eventually though the pressure told and from a scrum close to the whitewash, Exiles managed to ground the ball over the line. During the build up to the try, the Hammarby 10 and 12 collided making contact with each others head, and as they both appeared to be concussed, following several minutes delay, the refferee refused to allow them to continue the match, on the grounds of safety. A correct call. The try was converted and with no further scores the half time whistle went with the visitors 3-7 up.
From the restart it was apparent that Hammarby were not going to roll over and despite losing two influential players, were going to take the game to the opposition. However this tactic was thwarted by their more illustrious opponents and on only one occasion did they manage to threaten the Exiles line.
Meanwhile the constant probing and attacks down the hosts blind side started to produce results and eventually led to a fine try, although the bounce of the ball was favourable in their execution. Hammarby managed to launch an attack through their centre, evading one poor tackle attempt and then going for a run until he was halted by some fine cover defence and from the resultant turnover ball, the Exiles winger raced 60 metres down the field for a fine try. Exiles then managed a further score to run out comfortable winners 3-28.
As a result the Stockholm Exiles club secured an overall victory by 49-15.

Neither final was the spectacle we were all hoping for, but the winners did score 7 tries to opposition's 0. Some of which were worth the entrance fee. Our congratulations to the winners on a fine season.

  2. Congratulations to all teams in the final series this year. It was great to watch.

From the side lines, i would have to say it was great to see how the exiles changed their attack in both of the second games v's enkoping and Hammarby. Nice to see proactive coaching that seems to have caught opposition defenders in the wrong channels.

Well done to hammarby for making their first final appearance. They proved very difficult to break defensively and were very worthy silver medalists.

A very good comment by someone in the other posts about moving sweden rugby forward. That should be the focus and not political garbage.

Looking forward to watching more of the same next year - well done players

  3. it was nice to see how those you call pub players, unrespectful people, and all sorts of nice compliments were the first ones to assist Hammarby´s injured players in the head clash, to put them in recovery position, and to call the doctors, while the rest of their Hammarby teammates were in the goal line watching, friends? maybe some of you should rethink and give this Exiles team the credit they deserve, and like they said in some other post, let 2011 be the league without bitching and complaining, just rugby!!!!

  5. Is this good for Swedish Rugby?

Exiles took the national championships - but one of the Swedish Plan
Swedish champion - or rather un-Swedish champion?
Yesterday won the Stockholm Exiles SM-final of the rugby.
But not one of the heroes of gold off the table has blue and yellow passport.
I came here for adventure's sake. And now I'm Swedish champion. It feels unreal, "said Australian captain Rhys Allen.
Stockholm Exiles rugby is the Swedish giant.
But that does not automatically mean that they are gigantic Swedish.
Sportbladet would have liked a message of thanks to yesterday's gold heroes from this article.
But we fail, there is still none of them would understand.

    No one speaks Swedish !

None of the players in the starting setup is talking even decent Swedish. This club was founded originally as a meeting place for foreigners. But in recent years, the international character penetration extreme, "says veteran Hamish Mabon.
Six Australians, one Spaniard, two South Africans, five British and one New Zealander.
There you have all nationalities in players who started the match against Hammarby First picture in Stockholm yesterday.
I came here for adventure's sake. And now I'm Swedish champion. It feels unreal. Look, my hands are shaking, "said team captain Rhys Allen to Sportbladet shortly after he raised the Championship trophy in the sky.
Allen is not alone in having come to Sweden "for adventure's sake."
Hard work Like most of his teammates got Australian hear of Stockholm Exiles through acquaintances.
Exactly. I came here in April. Apart from rugby I'm working as upholsterers.
The team's coach Dylan Schofield is also from Australia.
After suffering an injury saddled Schofield on from player to coach before this season.
There is so much hard work behind this gold. When other teams can build long term is to this club with an almost entirely new group for each season. We have succeeded and today I feel great pride, "said gold coach.

  6. In order to clarify some facts ... ... ...

It makes no sense to shut out players from other countries from playing in Sweden. BUT there are other ways to limit the arrogant and abusive players from coming to Sweden and be hefty! For example, the clubs compounds in Sweden makes it clear what we think and through various actions to change the approach that some clubs take players here that do not add Swedish rugby anything. We can also hope that the clubs themselves are acting by others in the association may be a change of policy and vision of the association. So simple expression that other leaders in the society reacts so active that it does not want to participate in the association's vision and not allow some of the association, as the example of the Exiles case - buy a brand new team - but with different means to affect his club to invest in domestic players more than just buy players from around the world. How much fun can it be that as leaders and players in a club to work to get the talented own players and then when they are on the verge of playing for the first team to buy the 10 players who take off several years of work and young people the opportunity to play senior rugby. Communities can act itself, which obviously Enköping did this year when they did not want to have some Argentines playing in their team. The same was Spartacus, but unfortunately they took him back.
If more clubs act against players who behave badly so solved the problem automatically.
There are probably more players who have changed clubs or forced to stop moving because they do not function in a club? Moral courage and a board that thinks beyond just win NOW and take responsibility for his club and makes sure that arrogant and rude players are not allowed to shit down the club's reputation.

In addition, the Federation set up rules to restrict the number of players from outside, which does not stop them from playing. By example, make sure that there must be seven players who will play for Sweden in the boot setup, on the pitch during the match, and the rest may be the player of their choice. Then there will be no end to the players to play and participate, but only that there must be a number of players who are egibility to play for Sweden.
There are certainly other legitimate ways and means to get more talented rugby youngsters to continue playing even at senior level. That special treatment is sometimes a path that could lead some to think.

The fact that a Foreign Team to win Swedish Championship does not add anything to Swedish rugby in the long run, but only impoverishes all youth who are down in all the clubs

  7. it's quite interesting to see that people seem to think that exiles didn't have any swedish players on the field. I personally think that a a couple of matches for the national team or as reserves should be enough. as in Ian Gowland mark baker ,Paul sullivan and Mac Jelec Dozo. or a player like Jacob wanag who by the record speaks excellent swedish.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Exiles has a new development policy and its youth section is undergoing considerable review and improvement.

Again people seem to be critising without actually knowing what Exiles are doing. Try asking and you might get a surprise.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I have been talking quite a bit with other rugby supporters lately and agree totally with what has been said above. The Mabon's can keep rolling out their standard *we are called exiles because we take overseas players* but the fact is that Exiles are ruining not bettering Swedish rugby.

Exiles have a great junior program, the best in the country, yet how many of their juniors started in the SM? I would think none.

They also say that you can't restrict the amount of EU players in a club. However if the Union wants to be serious about improving the standard of the Swedish Men's team it must start by seeing the retention of the juniors and allowing them to play at Mens level. We believe the Union should, like other countries do, restrict the amount of non-swedish nationals on the field at one time. I think that to start with to assist Exiles more so than any other club would be to allow only 5 non-swedish nationals on the field at any one time. That way Exiles can still buy their 15 import players but 10 of them have to be on the bench. That way they still are here to help the nationals to improve their game.

Then decrease the number to 3.

I think the biggest problem we have at the moment with Swedish Rugby is that the administrators are useless. They don't actually do anything. I would love to know what they actually do.

A whole new board needs to be put in place with the main interest being to improve Swedish Rugby and they shouldn't care if they make enemies of teams like Exiles and Enkoping.

Just so I don't sound like I am just being negative to Exiles I believe that unless rules are brought in Enkoping will be doing the same thing as Exiles over the break and buying forwards to improve their club. They know they can not make another SM without improving their pack and they have the money to go out and buy players for 2011.

Is this really what we want to improve the Swedish game? The team with the biggest money and best import players win the SM while teams like Hammarby and Spartacus will never win because they have no money.

Can Exiles really be happy waking up to find the Sportbladet making fun of their SM win? However they should get used to it because Swedish rugby supporters are tired of overseas players holidaying here and winning the SM.

Congratulations to Hammarby on a wonderful season and for making the SM despite having no money or import players. It is my belief that every player who started for Hammarby will be back next year and that every player except the fullback played for them last year. This is great. But i think next year I can tell you it will be a Enkoping v Exiles SM because those two clubs can buy players.

Act now Federation or Swedish rugby will die!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Now that the SM is over we start to turn our attention to the National team and the poor selections.

Honestly, how Can we expect Paul Sullivan who is not even good enough to start for Exiles and has played mostly B team this season to be good enough to start in the national team for these 2 tests? He hasn't played against any good competition whilst playing B team but then he has to be at his best at his age to play test team.

Why was not Hammarby 13 selected at all?

Can we get Mike Tatus to write something in this blog explaining selections as he is the only selector? It appears Hammarby coach does not fear writing here surely Tatus should have to explain to all of us his selections so we can understand and support our team.

  11. The only way sweedish players will get better is by playing against quality opposition ie. Foreign players the more you twats are against foreigners the worse sweden will perform wake up to yourself

    ReplyDelete
  12. Let me guess Anonymous you an an exile player. Only exile players would show disrespect like you do calling us twats.

Explain to me how you are strengthening our national team when you come here and take places of exiles junior players who will never play for mens team.

Exiles have most of the players in the junior academy teams but then they stop playing rugby because you come here and stop them from playing for mens team.

The only way our national team will get better is if you foreigners dont come here and allow our academy players to play mens rugby.

You should wake up to yourself and go home on your plane. You are not wanted here. Even the sportbladet make fun of your win rather than congratulate you.

    I think you say Boooooooooom!

    ReplyDelete
  13. "Quality opposition" thats an interesting name. Are you saying that Exiles have quality players? I am sorry but I didn't think any of you play National League 1 or Currie Cup Div 1 or Premier Grade or Heartland Championship.

I must have been wrong. I thought the only players who come here are from low division clubs in their country.

I am sure all people would like to know which players have played at a high level in their country. Please tell us.

    ReplyDelete
  14. So do you think it's fair that a foreign player who comes here for 1 year can take the place of current national player Paul Sullivan and make him sit on the bench. Are you saying that Sullivan is not quality enough for Exiles and they had to buy a player to take his spot.

I think the only way swedish players will get better is if they are actually allowed to play in the top team rather than playing in B team or sitting on reserve bench

    ReplyDelete
  15. Just for the record exiles have developed many youngsters and continue to do so with the largest youth rugby setup in Sweden by a distance. People quite rightly point out that this year we have had very few homegrown players starting for the first team, however look a little deeper and you will see that we have promoted from the u17 from previous years, a number have played for the seconds this year giving them a first taste of senior rugby, some, those deemed good enough have started in the cup matches and benched for league matches. If you don't believe me go and ask Nino Mazonne and the two Viktors who have amongst others played first team rugby this season, also check the bench for the SM Final had two juniors promoted at the expense of several other imports who could have been chosen. Development is a long term issue exiles would be foolish to just throw in kids to keep others happy, but letting them play alongside quality imports or in the seconds can only improve their games during their development. Also as far as player retention goes I know that we also loose a lot of players at around 18 years of age. Exiles are regularly criticised for this but I would suggest this is a nationwide problem otherwise all you other clubs would be overflowing with Swedish talent which clearly you are not. A case in point we have two very talented brothers at Exiles one played first team this season the other would almost certainly have done so, both have come through the exiles youth system and played second team rugby from a young age, both have the required talent to go on and play for Sweden, however both have decided to go and study in the UK and consequently now play their rugby there. At 18 most young men in Sweden are looking at studying outside their hometown, or traveling around the world, which is fantastic, however it does mean that they are no longer available to their clubs, some will continue to play in other cities for other clubs, many will not, this is unfortunate but what can we do except keep training youngsters and hoping we can retain a percentage? And lastly the Mabons put a lot of time, money and effort into our game, wether you like it or not that is a bonus for Swedish rugby, personally I would wish for more such people in our game not less, that way we would have more strong clubs in our league, just because they are part of another club don't get bitter about it as it does good for your club too indirectly. Exiles was formed by them specifically as an expat club, or club for foreigners , and named as such so please stop pointing out our use of foreigners it's as stupid as saying that London Irish were full of Irish during the old days, it's obvious the clue is in the title.

  16. It wouldn't be appropriate for Mike to comment on a blog or any other offical of the union. In fact I'd expect someone in such a position to be relieved of their duties if they did.

The fact remains as national mens coach selection is Mike's responsibility and as followers and supporters of Swedish Rugby we have to get behind whatever team is picked.

He'll have reasons for picking the players he has for sure. What matters is the results on the pitch. If he gets them then his selection is justifiable if not then like all coach he holds responsibility for such things.

This is another classic case of people in Sweden not coming together and just taking pot shots at each other and everyone that breathes.

    ReplyDelete
  17. There is no exile that has been "bought" this year. They get help finding jobs, but they pay rent, and often when there isn't much work on have to do it tough. All of those "bought players" would be on much better money playing in their home countries being Australia, England or wherever. Not one of them is going to go home with pockets full money. Thus making Sweden like every other country in the world where people come from all over to play! Most people come over because they know someone who has been here before so they go straight to exiles.

Great match report from the weekend!

why don´t you do your own research, nowadays it´s really easy to find backgrounds on anyone, google is your friend, I´m pretty sure you´ll get some surprises...
and for the record, the more you put Exiles players down, the more you put swedish rugby down, because you are stating that a bunch of useless players from abroad can take the swedish league like they did, with some ease...that doesnt say much about your rugby...maybe try to find the causes somewhere else.
and honestly, the problem is the same all over the world, kids dont want to fight for their spots, they like to get everything given and easy, that´s the problem, all over the world, kids dont want to work in something they wont get compensated from, so they surrender, because they are not keen to put the work in that´s needed to succeed....

  19. I know a few of the exiles players quite well. Are you telling me their stories of airfares being paid for are lies? Are you also telling me that their stories of cash "handouts" when as you put it times are hard are also incorrect? I have also been told by them of the rent they have to pay in one of the houses owned by committee member and it is extremely minimal.

Now if a player is getting his airfares paid for, cash handouts and minimal rent, yes I agree they are bought.

The players I know aren't paid anything for playing in their own country. Their getting a lot more playing football over here than what they would if they stayed in their own country.

As for the comment about the Mabons, yes they put a lot of time, effort and money into the Exiles, not sure how it helps all the other struggling clubs. Instead of painting them as heroes of swedish rugby please restrict it to heroes of Exiles rugby.

You think by having money and being able to spend it on import players it makes our teams stronger. I doubt that very much. It weakens the base for our national team. Imagine if all clubs went out and did what Exiles and to a lesser extent Enköping do. They all had money and spent it on 15 import players, what type of Swedish competition would we have then? Not one player would be swedish and all of our local players would be playing in lower divisions and Tatus would be choosing all his players from lower divisions.

Using one of your own words - you are a twat and those comments are just stupid and show that you have very little knowledge of what you are talking about. But I guess you have to defend your employer.

  20. Sorry I thought Exiles had a house where some players stay and that they had a couple of cars that they share and that their airline tickets are paid for. No thats not bought. Its just making them feel at home.

  22. I find it interesting that Mabon on the Exiles webpage writes that more or less the entire team will be returning to play next year.

I would love to bet on that one. I have already spoken to 3 players who arent.

    ReplyDelete
  23. If the Exiles kids are good enough to play they will and as said above by someone 3 have played first team rugby this year.
The one's that are not good enough to play won't as is the case with all over the world, Sweden is no different.
This idea of Exiles buying in players and therefore making it unfair to clubs who don't have money has an element of truth but has no one realised that this is the way the world works? Life isn't fair sometimes and everyone doesn't start on a level playing field.
Speaking as a foreigner ( and not trying to antagonise a barrage of angry responses here) I think the attitude shown on this blog towards Exiles is a based on the socialist past in Sweden.
There isn't going to be any major changes to limiting the amount of foreigners playing here any time soon so wouldn't your national team benefit from you all getting behind it constructively rather than slagging off the team that should be congratulated on a very comprehensive SM guld win?

Also the comment about the negative newspaper report on the final towards Exiles, why does that person believe that Exiles would be disappointed and angry regarding that when they seem to thrive on the rest of the country disliking them?

    ReplyDelete
  24. The only problem with your thinking above that in the rest of sweden clubs do have to play their players as they finish in juniors and move into seniors because we can't afford to go out and buy a whole new team. So sweden is different, but I still feel not that much. It is a huge exaggeration to say that all over the world clubs who have players not good enough for First Grade won't be playing in that grade. I would think the vast majority of amateur clubs that can't afford to buy players have to play whatever players the best players they have, no matter how good they are compared to everyone else.

What do our clubs do that don't have money? Are we supposed to start games without 15 players because we think they are not good enough to play first grade. That is a very naive remark you make.

My feelings about the Exiles players are that the dislike is not aimed at them, although this year it has been because there have been quite a few arrogant players make statements on here, but more aimed at what the club is doing to destroy a "swedish" competition and harm the national team and not allow a pathway for their younger players to senior rugby.

As you say there isn't going to be a change from this current Federation because they don't do very much at all, however the more supporters and players and clubs stand up against what is happening at Exiles and to a lesser extent Enköping, perhaps the Federation may listen.

    ReplyDelete
  25. "You'll get some surprises" as to the rugby backgrounds of the Exile players. I know the No2 is a national player for Spain ranked 23 in the world, and that the coach played for some lower level competition in an Under 85kg team (whatever that means) in Australia, however please share with us the other players that would surprise.

I am sure all readers would like to know.

    ReplyDelete
  26. As an exile player i feel it is about time to comment on this so-called rugby blog.

For the entire season I've avoided posting comments as I feel it is completely negative and irrelevant as to what happens on the field. Rugby takes place on the field, not on a couch, and the sooner the people who try playing mind games through the medium of the internet realise the sooner rugby in Sweden will progress.

I firstly want to say how much the experience of playing in Sweden has affected me. The entire Swedish lifestyle has rubbed off on me and I have loved every minute of it. I have a job, I pay into the system, I spend my money in the Swedish economy and wherever possible I try to use as much as the Swedish language I have learnt in my short time here. Like it or not, Swedish is not generally a language taught in schools outside Scandinavia so I apologise for my lack of knowledge previous to the visit. Which is why it infuriates me when egotistical idiots who call themselves journalists, like the one from Sport Bladet from the final, publish comments as they do.

Secondly, to the pub player comments, many people in the team have played for their county or state, their region, in a professional rugby academy, their national side at junior level and in the national leagues. Stop thinking that the players who come here are simply here for the beer and women! Is it that hard to believe that good players want to experience a different lifestyle? Stop being so narrow minded! And to those narrow minded people, this can only be good. Without wanting to sound arrogant, only honest, playing with good players and against good competition develops players and teams. And if the youth can get involved whether it be in training with this calibre of players, being coached by them and even playing with them in the first XV which several youngsters have done in the Exiles set-up this year, this can only be beneficial to the future of Swedish rugby. And if it is true regarding Exiles youth finding greener pastures at different clubs and playing first XV elsewhere, then it is the Exiles' loss! Why would you complain at this!

Thirdly, to the comments made at Hamish Mabon earlier in the season regarding his integrity, I owe a hell of a lot to him after all he's done for me this year. He's found a roof for my head, put himself out to help me when he can and ultimately bent over backwards to make sure my stay in Sweden has been as smooth as possible (not just financially I hear you cry). He has been that good to me that I hope to repay him with my loyalty next season, and I know a number of players wish to do the same. I feel anybody who questions his integrity and professionalism towards the sport needs to take a good luck in the mirror. No offence intended. It is the same people who criticise good people like Mr Mabon who taint the whole Swedish image which I admire so much.

And finally, to all the people slating Mr Paul Sullivan, do you really think the selectors are going to look at ANONYMOUS comments and take them into account? Grow a set and if you believe your opinion should be taken seriously put your name to it and and some integrity to the comment. Paul is a solid member of the Exiles team and I believe his position is justified, but I suppose that is bias.

Rant over. I've made my opinion clear and wish to stay anonymous in the Exiles camp. I've been massively impressed with the standard of Swedish rugby and hope to be back next year for a bigger and better SM-series. I hope to hear your opinions on my view but that is all it is, not a starter for another slagging and bitching match. Cheers

  27. I can verify what anonymous wrote on 12 October 2010 23:00 wrote!
I have been talking to several players who have chosen to play in Exiles instead of my club, because they got paid more. Between 30-50.000 kr beyond job, an apartment (cheap), airline ticket and access to a car. I've talked with several players playing in Enköping also and they have reached similar system but does not pay the players any money without fix job and the players share the rent where they live. I think most clubs are trying to help new players as they will in any way and that's just to show good hospitality.

But questions arise handled all financial transactions in accordance with the laws of Sweden or ....?
I think that's one reason that people all around in Sweden believes that players who come here and get many benefits also mocks Swedish players when they play, and is generally cocky on the side of the plane and on various blogs, should behave in a different way.

The fact that some clubs do not understand it is sickening and shows poor leadership, where the agenda is something other than the development of rugby and win games.

Unfortunately, the quite natural that many require action not the leaders of the clubs can handle this in accordance with the rules in the Swedish society and in rugby, and they find it offensive that flown players behaving so far from rugby code of conduct they do.

To start i am not an Exiles player or have ever been.

I feel that anyone that does not agree with most of your points, has their heads in the sand.

Quick recap of the whole blog (and most of the website!!) I don't think people have a problem with players coming over from every country in the world, I think the problem is the number of players a team can field on any given Saturday.

I feel a team should be allowed to buy unlimited amount of player for unlimited sums of money, and not have to explain themselves to anyone. BUT there should be a cap on the amount of players and i agree with the ruling about having to play X amount of games before X-date to be allowed to playing the semis and finals.

The more money is put in, the better players, more publicity and the more sponsorship that is attracted, inputing more money. The circle goes round and round for who ever is prepared to put in the effort and reap the rewards.

Unfortunately for the poor clubs (mine included), we don't have the money. We have to come up with another plan and attract players on the back of results and team spirit.

    Anonymous for the same reasons.

    Constructive thoughts?

  29. @ 14 October 2010 19:15 : Interesting to hear from an exiles outsider. I am also an exiles outsider, and also feel that things perhaps are a little unbalanced, but also agree : why does everyone complain about a club that seems to be adding to rugby :

    -largest junior club
    -produces many juniors in academies
    -active 1sts, 2nds, 3rds
    -a few national players
    -active womens
    -hosts largest 10's in world
-spotlight on swedish rugby through 10's
-many foreign clubs now know about sweden
    -pour money into rugby
-invest in players that go to other clubs

Exiles mens were a very good team this year, but i certainly think looking at the finals that majority swedish teams raised the bar as well to compete - is that not good ? Im only intested in constructive thoughts also. Im sick of reading so much meaningless bullshit and complaining.

Somne professional sports have salary caps and other mechanisms to ensure a fairly balanced comp. Sweden is obviously not professional, but how about every starting line-up must have more than X players eligable for national selection ?

Anyone know how it is working in Japan? What is happening with Swedish rugby and the Olympic program? These are the guys the focus should be on.

Personally i would love for Exiles to buy Habana and Chabal!!
