Håckes Cup 2011

We thought that we might take a trip to picturesque Växjö to take in the spectacle of the indoor 7's competition for both men and women. Traveling incognito and trying not to stick out like sore thumbs, which we think we managed, we were hoping to be entertained by some classic running rugby. After all, we had been informed that there were people in attendance who were going to report back on those players that shone, we guess you could call them spotters?
This for many players was their first run out since the end of last season and for others it was presumably part of their pre-season warm up. While for a great many others, it was just a social event.
With 7's now being an Olympic sport, we were hoping to see an improvement on last years play, alas this was not the case and from the moment the first Ladies match kicked off, it was apparent that there was a dire need for some fitness, some dramatic weight loss and for some 7's coaching! We lost count of the number of basic errors. the amount of contact etc, and whilst the competitors may have enjoyed it, this was a very poor advert for the game. Still, we hoped that the men would be able to show us how the game is played, how wrong we were, if anything, they were worse than the women, although with one or two exceptions, they appeared fitter, note to the men, yes your bums do look big in those tights, at least that is what we heard from some of the women, sounds a bit like pot, kettle and black we think.  Mentioning fitness brings us nicely to the officials, most of whom appeared not to know the laws ( or amendments as per the competition ), there positioning was in the main very poor and that may also have something to do with their fitness. Still they can concentrate on getting fit and improving their knowledge over the next few weeks in time for the start of the season, Well we can but hope!
Back to the rugby, given there pedigree it was no surprise that Exiles were one of the few teams to attempt, albeit at times, to play the game as it should be. We were surprised to see Hannes Eriksson and Will Brown running out for Exiles, should we read anything into this? we know that Exiles are always keen to recruit talented players, from home and abroad.  Having spoken to a couple of the squad, they were here to have a run out and enjoy themselves. Well the grandfather certainly did that and the rest of the squad were not far behind him!
However after what was a really poor display of 7's rugby, we feel sure that the spotters will not have been troubled and we also have a plea. If the Union are serious about having teams that are able to compete in this form of the game, and more importantly, qualify for the Olympic games? Then some serious planning and organizing needs to take place and it needs to be done much sooner than later!! As the game appears to have gone backwards.
Håkes Cup was a lost opportunity for the Union, let's hope that they learn from this!
For the record, Exiles won both the Men's and Women's cup.

  1. Couldnt agree more! To hear the announcer describing how wonderful the level of rugby was made me question his sanity or perhaps ask for some of the drugs he must be on! the rugby was embarrassing and the referees just get worse and worse! What a waste of time!

  2. Too many expats who never played higher than third team rugby refereeing and organising rugby clubs in Sweden. they were considered idiots in England, Scotland orwherever they came from, and now get to build there little empires and power bases here in Sweden, with no one to question them. Swedish rugby needs rid of this average pat yourself on the back mentality. Stockhom Exiles were head and shoulders above the rest of teams at Håckes and most of the players were hung over or still drunk from a night of partying!

  4. FYI - The Union does not organise Håckes Cup, so I'm not sure how you're expecting them to use that opportunity better...

As usual, a poorly informed and painfully negative blogg entry.

  5. Not sure why the refs performances have been questioned again, certainly weren't as bad as some of the players. This was a pre-season run out and wouldn't have been possible without them, may i suggest that you change the record, ref bashing is boring and best left to footballers

  6. FYI. We are aware that VRK organize Håckes Cup. The Union could though for example have arranged for the National Squads to have played in the tournament including the under 21's and showcase the talent of those players. At least they should be able to play 7's and that would have been a far better sight to have watched, rather than the dross (Exiles excluded) that was on display. You should start to wake up to reality, the 7's game in this country needs a radical overhaul if it is to produce National Squads able to compete and qualify for the Olympics. We believe that is an honest view and if you think it is negative, so be it.

  7. Since you're full of such great ideas, I suggest you get your opinionated self involved in the running of Swedish rugby and turn that radical overhaul of yours into a reality. Would be much better use of your time and energy than just writing about everything you think is wrong with Swedish rugby.

  8. Standard of the Håckes Cup wasn't particularly great. With only 2 'Senior or Elite' Ref's there, you were never likely to get every decision right.

But to slate the officials carte blanche is pretty unfair considering the number of referee's and clubs that invest in developing referee's. If the clubs and people like the writers of this blog stopped bitching and tried to become part of the solution then maybe we'd get somewhere.

As it stands we don't have the numbers to properly select 'Elite' players or officials from.

So instead of bitching constantly at how poor Swedish Rugby is. Front up and offer your opinion on how we can all make it better.

But then again it's easier to sit behind a keyboard and complain than it is to offer support and become part of the solution not the problem.

  9. How about skipping the negativity and the low blows and actually writing something decent about the rugby during the weekend instead?

  10. From what I've seen, the standard isn't exactly what you'ld see at the Hong Kong 7s but by the same token has improved an awful lot from 2006/2007 when ERK butchered every single team they played without breaking a sweat, and most teams didn't seem to know how to play 7s correctly. Sure, there were issues with handling errors and passing but all in all I though the standard was at least a mild improvement from when I pleayed...I would go so far as to say that the average standard of 7s on display at Hackes was higher than the average standard of 15s on display the rest of the season...
