Elite series match round up.

Exiles welcomed Pingvin’s traveling squad of players for their fourth match of the series. However it was not going to be a good day for Pingvin as the Exiles quickly got into their stride and crossed the whitewash twice within the first five minutes to lead 14-0. There then followed a period of stability which was finally broken when Exiles again went over the line to add to their score. From then on it was almost all one way traffic with the home side launching attack after attack. With some resolute defending Pingvin managed to hold out for a while and even created some attacks. However it was not to last and they then conceded another handful of scores to leave them trailing 52-0 at halftime.
The second half saw Exiles starting half asleep, until they were galvanised back into action by the first of a hat trick of tries after 14 minutes and the half then started to resemble the first. Attack followed attack and more tries were added as Exiles ran amok. At the final whistle a relieved Pingvin managed to keep the score under 100 losing by 95-0.
It appears that Stockholm Exiles are now getting into their stride, but Pingvin could be in trouble this season.

Hammarby were the host to Goteborg and set about the visitors from the kick off. It soon became obvious that GRF were not going to be able to offer much, which is sad considering that two years ago, they were more than a match for the home side. However they were not going to trouble Hammarby on a fine day for rugby and went home after receiving a 81-3 loss. Hammarby are certainly going in the right direction and will be a tough team to beat with their game improving match upon match. Goteborg have quite a bit of work to do to become a rugby force again.

Partille was the latest stopover for Enkoping in their quest to retain their title. A match that was expected to be a formality for them was anything but that, as they found out when it became apparent that Spartacus were not going to roll over, instead they were going to battle for every ball. So began a game of attrition, with the home side giving as good as they got. Enkoping were soon into their stride and with a host of talent in their ranks appeared confident, but Spartacus had a defence that did not take a backward step and managed to turn over the ball on a number of occasions. Eventually though, ERK put together a move which enabled their fullback to score under the posts. Shortly after a yellow card was shown to one of the home side players and for the rest of the half they were down to 14 men. Enkoping could not make their player superiority count and the half time score was 0-7.
With numbers even at the start of the second half, the match continued in a similar vein as the first half for the first ten minutes and then with Spartacus starting to apply more pressure they began to create chances of their own, this eventually led to a well worked try under the posts, leveling the scores. Enkoping were stung by that and came back at the home side and from a set piece worked a well constructed try, with the extra points added they were now leading 7-14. Spartacus came back at the visitors and started to gain considerable ground and once again this led to a try in the corner, which was converted. For the last few minutes the game could have been won by either side but a draw 14-14 ,was probably a fair result.

  1. My comment was removed from the other site so i will give this one a try.Great to see a team from the west stand up and put up a fight to one from the north.Well done Spartacus. On reports heard it was a tough match where a draw was a fair result. What concerns me is the lopsided results in the other games.Pingvin losing 95-0 to exiles and GRF losing 85 -3 at Hammarby. These results are a joke and as a player you don,t get enjoyment in the winning side or losing side.Especially the losing side. These results weren,t a one of either looking at the points table for example GRF had conceded 212 points and have scored 49.So in 4 games thats an average of the other team running in over 50 points. My point is it,s hard to retain players in these teams if they are getting battered week in week out. It,s really demoralizing as a player to lose like this if you are serious about your rugby. What might make things worse is the stronger teams ie the north will attract all the top players as they won,t want to be involed in a team that gets beat up every other week. Its great to see Hammarby becoming a real force while sad to see the decline in Pingvin and GRF.Lets hope Spartacus will keep improving and give us a hard game from the west week in week out.

  2. If the west can put out one decent side maybe it is a good idea that they have one Gothenburg team and join Vanersborg with pingvin. Then add 3 teams from Denmark and we might have a serious comp. For example

    Enköping
    exiles
    hammarby
    spartacus
    pingvin..Vanersborg combined
    3 denmark teams.
This would get a more even comp and not just a exiles, enköping final. The standard of play would increase and maybe we could attract more spectators. These thrashings of GRF and pingvin are a waste of time and does nothing to benefit the game here.

  3. Enköping
    Exiles
    Hammarby
    West District
    South District
    East Distict
    North District
    Norway Selection
    Finland Selection
    Denmark Selection

    Vad tycks ? : ) Hästen

  4. The problem in the west, well Göteborg is that there isn't enough players in the town at senior level to support 2 teams. Not enough at female or youth either for that matter.

Though the Spartacus result is a great one for the club and all credit to them for it. It doesn't hide the problems the club faces long term. It has NO youth set up to speak of, the youth players it has are not the highest quality so it will not be able to sustain itself long term.

GRF's men's team is in decline for many reasons, and even Spartacus lack numbers in the mens team at training to really develop and train properly as a team each week.

Everyone who knows rugby knows, for a club or senior men's team to properly develop and produce quality rugby it requires a regular turn out of around 30 guys twice a week, and then some decent coaches. You need those numbers to do a lot of the things necessary for training.

Neither Spartacus or GRF comes anywhere near those numbers on a weekly basis. Combined they would. Spartacus has no youth system and the coaches aren't to great, dedicated but GRF's youth walk all over them every time they meet.

Spartacus has no women's team, but it's senior men's team is going in the right direction all be it aging.

The best thing for rugby in Göteborg would be for Spartacus and GRF to merge. But personalities in both clubs would never allow it, or be able to work together.

What's better one large club capable of producing decent quality rugby and developing good talent for the future, or 2 clubs constantly at each others throats and not able to compete properly at the level they are at?

As good as the Enköping result is, we'll see the usual 40+ point scoreline ran in when Exiles visit Spartacus on the 19th.

  5. I don,t think Spatacus will be rolled by any team this year in fact they have 3 national players to come in yet !! Come the semis i think they could be starting to click.Time will tell...

  6. Anonymous @ "7 June 2010 21:04", you make some interesting points, but I think what you are doing is confusing a rugby "team" with a rugby "club". The reason that I joined a rugby club here in sweden was not to win rugby matches all the time (I've done my fair share of that already), but to have fun and make some great friends. That is what I have done.

It sadens me to see a great team like Enköping leave our club house straight after their match without even so much as a drink.

When we went up to Stockholm to play Exiles and Hammarby last year, we would have loved to have a few drinks in the club-house after. But the bar didn't seem to be open. What a pity that these clubs are interested in winning matches and nothing else.

Rugby is more than just a win-at-all-costs activity.

Stop taking yourselves so seriously. This is Sweden for God's sake

  7. Lite intressant!!

  9. Ok slow down now,
One point at home doesn’t make a whole year. Judge Spartacus after the have played all the northern teams home and away, then we know how good they are.
